O príncipe Rainier de Mônaco, da dinastia Grimaldi, casou com Grace Patrícia Kelly, uma das mais belas atrizes dos Estados Unidos, cuja carreira iniciara em Hollywood em 1951. Depois do casamento, Grace Kelly não voltou a fazer cinema, dedicando-se, a partir de então, a atividades de beneficência no principado. A atriz morreu em um acidente de automóvel, ao cair num precipício. Suas primeiras aparições no palco foram na Broadway, continuando sua carreira no cinema em filmes de diretores como Alfred Hitchcock, com quem rodou Disque M para Matar (1953), Janela Indiscreta (1954) e Ladrão de Casaca (1955). Recebeu um Oscar por sua interpretação em Amar É Sofrer (1954). Seu filme mais célebre foi o western de Fred Zinnemann Matar ou Morrer (1952), no qual desempenha papel decisivo nas cenas finais.
