    Jean Gabin, cujo verdadeiro nome era Jean-Alexis Moncorgé, iniciou sua carreira cinematográfica em 1931 e foi considerado durante mais de 40 anos uma das estrelas indiscutíveis do cinema francês. Por causa de seus lábios estreitos e seu olhar frio, dava a imagem perfeita para muitos filmes de mistério e policiais, nos quais interpretava tanto papéis de gângster (O Demônio da Argélia, 1937) como de policial (dando vida, por exemplo, ao comissário Maigret em filmes baseados nos romances de Georges Simenon). Interpretou freqüentemente personagens afastados da sociedade e fechados em si, duros consigo mesmos e com os outros.Seus papéis mais célebres deram-lhe inúmeros prêmios, como em A Grande Ilusão (1937), Os Sicilianos (1969) e O Gato (1970, contracenando com Simone Signoret).
