Philip Seymour Hoffman é filho de Marilyn L. O'Connor - uma advogada, juíza de varas de família e ativista dos direitos civis - e de Gordon S. Hoffman, um ex-executivo da Xerox.

Philip tem três irmãos, entre eles, Gordy Hoffman, que escreveu o roteiro do filme "Love Liza", no qual Seymor Hoffman atuou.

O ator tem ascendência irlandesa e, apesar de seus pais serem cristãos, nunca se apegou a qualquer religião. Seus pais se divorciaram quando ele tinha 4 anos de idade.

O primeiro trabalho de Philip Seymour Hoffman como ator foi uma peça em seu colégio, o Fairport High School, dirigida por Marjorie Marshall, em 1982.

Com formação clássica em teatro, Seymour Hoffman é formado pela New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Sua primeira atuação em filmes foi em um episódio da série "Law & Order", para televisão.

Hoffman se tornou um ator de cinema dos mais respeitados nos EUA, sendo dirigido por grandes cineastas contemporâneos, como Paul Thomas Anderson (trabalhou em 4 dos seus filmes), Irmãos Coen, Cameron Crowe, Spike Lee, David Mamet, Robert Benton, Todd Solondz e Anthony Minghella.

Destacando-se em sua carreira por uma incrível versatilidade, Philip Seymour Hoffman recebeu o Globo de Ouro e o Oscar de melhor ator por sua brilhante atuação no papel do escritor e jornalista Truman Capote, no filme "Capote", de Bennett Miller, uma narrativa sobre o envolvimento do próprio Capote no caso do assassinato da família Clutters, em Kansas, e todo o processo durante a preparação do seu best-seller sobre o caso, "A Sangue Frio".

Em 2009, Philip Seymour Hoffman foi indicado ao Oscar de melhor ator coadjuvante por sua participação no filme "Dúvida", de John Patrick Shanley.
