Fassbinder retratou no palco e no cinema a sociedade alemã do pós-guerra do ponto de vista dos marginais. Também abordou temas históricos, tendo como perspectiva a atualidade. Em apenas 14 anos, rodou mais de 40 filmes, muitos dos quais baseados em suas próprias peças teatrais (As Lágrimas Amargas de Petra von Kant, 1971, filmado em 1972), que eram levadas à cena em Munique, no Anti-theater, fundado e dirigido pelo próprio Fassbinder. Depois da dissolução da companhia em 1971, dirigiu durante um ano (1974) o teatro Frankfurters Theaters am Turm, de Frankfurt, voltando-se, a seguir, para o cinema. Fassbinder costumava atuar em suas próprias obras e nos filmes que realizava. Uma de suas atrizes preferidas para interpretar personagens de mulheres fortes foi Hanna Schygulla (protagonista de O Casamento de Maria Braun, 1978, e de Lili Marlene, 1980). Entre suas obras principais está a série televisiva Berlin Alexanderplatz, com 14 episódios, baseada no romance homônimo de Alfred Döblin. Seu último trabalho, Querelle (1982, inspirado no romance de Jean Genet), aborda o tema da homossexualidade.
